The Birdie Bash!

I am Tournament Director again for our second annual Birdie Bash, a national chain of tournaments sponsored by Vibram Disc Golf. Last year, due to torrential rains, we postponed the tournament and ran into scheduling difficulties and had to shorten the tournament. This year, it will be a two-round tournament. If you are new and just want the fun, you may play just the first round and NOT compete for the second round prizes if you are crunched for time, but we'd love for you to hang out and see all the action. Either way, you keep your discs and shirt.

We will meet and distribute discs about 8:15 AM, and have a player's meeting, setting up teams and sending you to your hole assignments. Round one will be completed, score cards will come in, and we will sort you into teams based on your round one scores while you have lunch and brag about your great shots from round one. Then, now that you are warmed up and used to your discs, the real competition begins: round two!

What is the Birdie Bash format? You stop throwing when you hit the par throw, so a par 3 gets only two throws, a par 4 gets three, and a par 5 would get four throws before you pack up and head to the next hole. If you are having a disastrous hole, it is over with quickly and you start fresh on the next hole. How are points earned? Only for positive things! Hitting any metal connected to the basket on a legal throw is worth one point. Birdies (1 under par) are worth two points and eagles (2 under par) are worth five. Points can stack together: e.g. hit the basket on the first throw and make your birdie on the second earns you three points for that hole. Most points wins! Since in the second round you are playing with similarly talented people, each card will have a winner of a small prize, and there will be a grand champion in a men's, women's and under 13 division. Champions receive an invite to go compete in the national Birdie Bash tournament.

Mostly, it's fun with friends, learning the game, celebrating great throws, mocking yourself on the bad ones. It's a great way to learn the game or teach the game to someone who hears you talk about it all the time. Most people playing will be first timers or nearly so. You do NOT have to be a pro to play and have a great time!

What do you get for your $40 entrance fee?
1 Vibram fairway driver (Notch, Arch, Valley or Vamp in Medium or Firm rubber) and 1 Vibram Putter (VP, Ridge, Sole or Summit in Medium or Firm rubber) in your choice of weights (these go for about $20 each, retail), 1 polo shirt described as "the best shirt ever produced for disc golf," a nice water bottle and helping a couple charities: 10% of the funds go to St. Jude's and Autism Speaks. This will be an official PDGA event this year, so you can brag about that the next week at work. Oh, yeah, prizes as well, if you perform!

If you want to try out the discs before you order, or just need more info, let me know. I have most of them! If you want to learn how to throw before the tournament, it's the last Saturday of spring break, and I'll be free to teach DURING spring break. DON'T PROCRASTINATE! You must sign up a week before the tourney to get the stuff shipped in time!

If you want to sponsor a hole with your company or donate some prizes, (PLEASE!) let me know!

Discs toward the right are better for slower arms (new players.) Discs toward the left are for stronger players.
